    Do Pregnant Women Have Discharge?

    Updated on 3 November 2023

Pregnancy is a delicate time that requires intense love and care for the mother and child to remain healthy. This time can also be quite nerve-racking for most individuals, especially primigravidas. They face a dilemma with certain doubts such as 'Do pregnant women have discharge?' and 'What does discharge in early pregnancy mean?'. All your doubts on 'discharge during pregnancy' are now answered in this article that covers topics like '1 week Pregnancy discharge', 'White discharge during early pregnancy', and 'Yellow discharge during pregnancy'.

How early in pregnancy does discharge start?

Vaginal discharge, also known as leukorrhea, typically starts one to two weeks immediately after conception. The visible change takes place gradually and increases as the pregnancy advances. Discharge in early pregnancy is a normal phenomenon and nothing to be alarmed about. It plays a vital role in keeping the walls of the vagina and cervix soft, thus helping to prevent infections. Healthy vaginal discharge is colorless or white that is odorless or mild-smelling. Its consistency can differ from thin to thick or mucus-like.

How does the discharge look like in early pregnancy?

Discharge in early pregnancy is colorless or white that is odorless or mild-smelling. Its consistency can differ from thin to thick or mucus-like. The vaginal discharge known as leukorrhea increases gradually as the pregnancy advances. This is due to increased blood flow and the estrogen hormone. Also, it can happen anytime during pregnancy. Colors other than white may indicate yeast infections.

What color is discharge when pregnant?

Vaginal discharge can look, smell and feel different from one situation to another. Healthy vaginal discharge is usually white or colorless and odorless. Foul-smelling white-colored discharge can often indicate a yeast infection. Here are a few types of vaginal discharge colors and what they indicate:

    1. White :

White discharge during early pregnancy that’s clear and thin indicates healthy vaginal discharge. One has to worry if it has a foul odor which indicates yeast infections or other related diseases.

    2. Pink:

Light pink discharge during pregnancy is known as 'spotting' and can occur after conception. An increase in the hue of pink can be an indication of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the implantation of the fertilized egg is outside the uterus.

    3. Green or Yellow:

A yellow or green-colored vaginal discharge during pregnancy is unhealthy. It is an indication of a vaginal infection that can either be a sexually transmitted disease or a cervical disease. A yellow or green-colored, foul-smelling, frothy-textured discharge is a sign to consult the doctor immediately. It can be related to severe complications that can affect the fetus.

    4. Red:

A red vaginal discharge, especially if it is heavy and contains clots, requires the immediate attention of a doctor. Red vaginal discharge during the first trimester can be a less serious sign of implantation infection. At later stages of pregnancy, heavy red-colored vaginal discharge can indicate a miscarriage.

Tips to manage discharge during pregnancy

Mild-smelling, whitish vaginal discharge during pregnancy may increase in volume and is completely natural. One has to worry only when the discharge is foul-smelling or of other colors. Doctors usually prescribe medications or antibiotics to treat such infections. Apart from these, here are a few health tips which all pregnant mothers should follow to maintain proper vaginal health during pregnancy:

    • Avoiding tampons or any vaginal insertions.

    • Douching is washing the internal vaginal area with water or any other fluid. Avoid douching or applying any perfume during pregnancy as these can aggravate vaginal infections by removing the protective mucus lining of the vaginal wall.

    • Avoiding scented feminine hygiene care products such as toilet paper and soap. Unscented and natural products should be preferred.

    • Panty liners absorb the excess vaginal discharge. Using them is a healthy option.

    • After passing urine or stool, wipe the genital area thoroughly.

    • After showering or swimming, dry the genitals properly.

    • Using breathable fabric underwear.

    • Nylon pantyhose and tight jeans should be avoided during pregnancy as they can lead to infection.

    • Eating healthy is paramount during pregnancy for the proper health of the mother and the fetus. Avoid excess sugar as they encourage yeast infection. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and salads. Drink plenty of water and fluids to keep the body hydrated during pregnancy.

    • Safe-to-consume probiotic food and supplements help prevent vaginal infections by maintaining proper pH levels.

Thus, an increased vaginal discharge during pregnancy is common, as long as it is white or colorless and odorless. An unusual discharge is indicated by a foul odor and/or color changes such as red, yellow, or green. One should contact the doctor or the local health care provider in such cases without delay. Following proper medication and hygiene reduces the risk of infections and diseases. Along with these, maintaining a proper diet and supplements helps in keeping both the mother and the fetus safe and healthy.
