As a new mom and, of course, being sleep-deprived, you must be curious and eager to know how to have your baby wake less at night so that you can get much-needed sleep. One factor which everyone wants to find out is the impact of breastfeeding and formula feeding on the newborn's sleep. Let's look at some facts to help you decide.
In the initial few months, babies who are given formula milk wake less at night and sleep for longer stretches compared to breastfed babies. The simple reason is that formula milk takes more time to digest, and babies generally wake up only if they feel hungry. So, the fuller they feel, the longer they will sleep. Breast milk is naturally easily digested and absorbed by a newborn's digestive and metabolic system.
Studies have proven that the total amount of sleep that breastfed and formula-fed babies get is almost the same.
Also, within nine to twelve months, there are hardly any differences in sleeping patterns and habits.
Sleeping time should not be your sole criterion when deciding between breast and formula milk.
It is a proven fact that breast milk is the perfect food for a newborn as it delivers all the nutrition that a newborn requires, and that too in a safe, natural way.

New parents need to find what works best for them and their babies.
Breast milk contains hormones such as prolactin and oxytocin that can promote relaxation and sleep in a newborn.
The act of breastfeeding itself can be calming and help soothe the baby into sleep.
The milk flow from the mother's breast can be slower and more regulated than the formula from a bottle, which can allow for longer, more restful feedings and sleep.
Formula-fed babies may need to be fed more often than breastfed babies, leading to more sleep disruptions.

To conclude, which milk to give should not be decided solely by its impact on sleeping habits, and as we have discussed, in the longer term, it hardly makes a difference. Even though breastfeeding is more time intensive and quite sleep-depriving for the mother, most experts consider breast milk far superior to the formula for the baby.
