    Top 8 Tips to Develop Reading Habit in Your Child

    Reading is considered the backbone of education but sadly most kids today prefer to watch TV or play games on their smartphones. The reason being most parents don’t focus on how to inculcate reading habits in a child right from an early age. If you are exposing your kids to some interesting books then surely, they’ll become more inquisitive, smart, and imaginative. You can nurture the love of reading in your child with the proper use of the right technique and can make your little one a rampant reader.

    How to Develop Good Reading Habits in Your Child?

    Establish a reading habit in your little one's life and make the world a better place for them by enhancing their reading skills. Here is how you can inspire your child to read:

    1. Begin early

    To help your child understand the importance of reading you must begin with some interesting bedtime stories. When your little one is exposed to various attractive reading materials, he/she will grow up looking forward to it. Just as you inspire your little one to develop other good habits like sleeping early and eating meals on time, so must you inspire them to read. Reading is one of the healthiest habits that aid in brain development and improvises the language skills of your child in the future.

    2. Make reading enjoyable

    A variety of books are available in the market but you must choose the ones that interest your child. Try reading some stories in a fun way by changing your voice as per the characters. Plain reading can be quite monotonous and if you are not elaborating with expressions then it’ll be a tough task to keep your child engaged in reading.

    3. Set an example

    If a parent is a non-reader, then it can be quite difficult for them to inspire their kids to read and learn. Kids love to imitate so you must read in front of your kids to inspire them. Talk to your baby about your favorite books.

    4. Take them to a library

    Introduce your child to the world of books by taking them to a library. The library is a great place to explore new books and kids get inspired when they observe that other children are also reading. Kids do get fascinated by looking at the wide variety of books and the way they are beautifully placed on the shelves.

    5. Reward them

    You must show interest in your child’s reading and to motivate them. You can praise them and reward them with an extra 1-hour session of their favorite cartoon show or video game. You must also gift books to your baby on small occasions because that’ll foster the love of reading in him/her. Set up a daily reading time for your little one.

    6. Read along

    Reading aloud short stories in a fun way can easily catch the attention of your child. Don’t forget to explain what you are reading. You can run your finger under the words as that’ll give them the sense to read from left to right. You must also ask a few questions to your child while reading just to ensure that your child is not distracted by anything else. Keep clearing all the doubts of your child calmly in between reading. Don’t lose your temper if your child makes a few mistakes.

    7. Create a reading nook

    Choose a comfortable spot in the house which receives ample light and turn it into a reading space for your child. You don’t need anything fancy to create the reading aura so don’t invest in something major. Try to create a cozy reading nook with a bookshelf or cabinet and a comfortable place to sit and read for both you and your child.

    8. Choose age-appropriate books

    You must ensure that you are using age-appropriate reading materials so that your kids don’t get bored. For babies- Bright-colored pop-up books and picture books work well. For toddlers- Picture books are perfect because it’s easy for them to understand phonic sounds and the right words. For preschoolers- Reading can be fun if they are reading books that have a lot of illustrations and stories. For kids of 5 years and above you must ask them the genre (comic, real, fiction) and then carefully chose the author before you hand over the book to your little one.
