What to Look For While Selecting a Wooden Baby Cot for Your Baby?

    Updated on 3 November 2023

Your little one is going to spend the initial years of their life in a baby cot, so make sure that the investment is worth it and the baby cot bed is built to last.

Some parents may be drawn towards a mini wooden baby cot owing to the less space it occupies than a full-size baby cot, however, parents may end up spending out more money for a larger baby cot later.

The idea of baby cots was that nursing women could avoid sharing bed with their little ones and avoid rolling over them. Wooden cots have always been preferred since the painted ones maybe come with the harmful lead-based paint which may backfire.

Things to look for in a baby cot

Here are a few specific things parents need to look out for in a safe baby cot bed:

    1. The size of the mattress is important as you don’t want to any space between the pad and cot’s edge. Never use any added or supplemental mattress and use the one which comes along with the baby cot.

    2. The mattress should not sag due to the baby’s weight and must be firm enough to support the baby. It should reach every corner of the cot with no spaces left at the sides.

    3. Look for a cot with the cot rail around 26 inches above the mattress, you’ll need to lower the mattress as your little one grows.

    4. Make sure the cot doesn't wobble as you shake it but is sturdy enough to hold the baby. If it shakes it might be not put together properly.

    5. Look for any nails, screws or glue that sticks out on the baby cot. In case it's painted it shouldn’t be paint peeling off or any splinters.

    6. Get a crib without any oversized cut-outs as again, your little one’s head or limbs may get trapped.

    7. All screws, bolts, nuts and other hardware may be put in a box and only original equipments should be used, don’t route for cheaper replacements available online.

    Other essential things to consider

Here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a wooden baby cot:

    1. Safety

Consider the safety being provided by the cot. The distance from the top of the mattress to the top of the lowest side should be at least 50 cm. There shouldn’t be any footholds which the child may use to climb out of the cot without any supervision.

    2. Entrapment

Any large space gaps in between may result in your little one getting caught in between or falling out from the gap whereas any cots with smaller openings may result in the baby’s little limbs getting caught.

    3. Ease of use

This is really important as this can become a major headache, especially for the sleep deprived patient. For an adult it should be easy to operate so that you can operate it with a single hand.
