Summary
At 9 weeks pregnant, your baby is officially a fetus, no longer an embryo, and is about the size of a grape, roughly 2.3 cm from head to bottom (KidsHealth). This week the heart has settled into four chambers and is beating strongly, tiny muscles let your baby make first movements you cannot feel yet, and facial features, fingers and toes are taking shape (Cleveland Clinic). You may feel tired, nauseous, bloated and more, all normal hormonal effects. Many mothers have their first ultrasound between weeks 8 and 12, and combined first-trimester screening is usually done from about week 10 to 14 if advised (NHS). Note: in India, prenatal sex determination is illegal, so a scan is never done to find out your baby's gender.
At 9 weeks pregnant you are near the end of your first trimester. Your baby is about 2.3 cm long, roughly grape-sized, and has just become a fetus. The heart has four chambers, limbs and facial features are forming, and your baby is starting to move even though you cannot feel it yet. Common symptoms include fatigue, tender breasts, frequent urination, bloating, nausea, heartburn and headaches. A first scan is common around this time, but it cannot and, in India, must not be used to reveal the baby's sex.

This is a big milestone week. Until now your baby was an embryo, and around the end of week 9 it officially becomes a fetus, which simply means it is growing and developing fast and starting to look more like a tiny baby every day.
At 9 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of a grape, measuring roughly 2.3 cm from head to bottom (crown to rump) (KidsHealth). Your first trimester is almost over, and with each passing day your baby looks more human.

A lot is happening inside your 9 weeks pregnant belly. It is still too early for an ultrasound to show your baby's sex, but this week the reproductive system begins to develop (Cleveland Clinic).
Here is what is taking shape this week:
| Body Part | What Is Developing at 9 Weeks |
|---|---|
| Heart | Has finished dividing into four chambers and is beating strongly |
| Muscles and limbs | Arms and legs are lengthening; developing muscles allow first tiny movements |
| Face | More defined features, including larger eyelids and a smaller nose; ears becoming more pronounced |
| Mouth | Gums and the sense of taste begin to form |
| Fingers and toes | Fingers are longer and broader at the tips, where fingerprints will later develop |
Although your baby is already moving, you will not actually feel these movements until later in pregnancy, usually well into the second trimester.
Even though you are only starting your third month, plenty is already going on inside you. The placenta has begun to develop, and once mature it will supply your baby with the oxygen and nutrients it needs (Cleveland Clinic).
Not all the changes are in your uterus. Pregnancy hormones cause changes throughout your body, including a natural dip in blood pressure and blood sugar in early pregnancy, which is one reason you may feel dizzy or tired.
This week you probably still look much like you did before pregnancy. You may put on a little weight around week 9, which can make tight clothing feel uncomfortable.
You might show only a very small bump, or none at all, but you can often feel your lower abdomen firming up. That is your growing uterus, which will soon expand to make room for your baby.
Remember that morning sickness can cause slight weight loss early on. If your morning sickness continues, you may keep losing a little weight. Minor weight loss is usually not a cause for concern, but do mention any significant changes to your doctor.
Your symptoms at 9 weeks are probably similar to earlier weeks, driven mostly by rising hormones. You may notice:
| Symptom | Why It Happens |
|---|---|
| Fatigue | Your body is using a lot of energy to support your baby's growth |
| Tender, swollen breasts | Hormones make breasts larger and more sensitive |
| Frequent urination | Hormonal changes and pressure on the bladder |
| Bloating and indigestion | Progesterone slows digestion |
| Heartburn | Common in the first trimester |
| Nasal congestion | Hormones increase mucus, leading to a stuffy or runny nose |
| Headaches | Another common effect of hormonal shifts |
Most of these are normal, but tell your doctor if any symptom feels severe or unusual.
If your pregnancy is not high risk, your doctor will usually arrange your first ultrasound sometime between weeks 8 and 12, so your first-trimester scan may be happening right about now (NHS).
This early scan, often done transvaginally, can:
If you have a high-risk pregnancy, for example with advanced maternal age, your doctor may recommend first-trimester screening. This combines an ultrasound with a blood test, usually done from about week 10 to 14, to assess the chance of genetic conditions such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) (NHS).
Important for readers in India: these tests are for your baby's health only. Prenatal sex determination is illegal in India under the PCPNDT Act, so a scan or screening test will never be used to tell you the baby's gender, and no clinic should offer this.
In India, the first trimester is often when many mothers first visit their obstetrician and start regular antenatal care. This is a good time to begin or continue your prescribed folic acid and iron, eat regular balanced meals despite nausea, stay hydrated, and get your recommended scans and blood tests. If you have not yet booked your first antenatal appointment, week 9 is a good time to do so.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| A scan at 9 weeks can tell the baby's gender | It cannot, the genitals are still forming, and in India sex determination is illegal anyway |
| No bump means something is wrong | Most women have little or no bump at 9 weeks, which is completely normal |
| Feeling no movement means the baby is not moving | Your baby is moving, but is far too small for you to feel yet |
| Losing weight from morning sickness harms the baby | Minor early weight loss is usually harmless, but tell your doctor if it is significant |
Nahin. 9 weeks par baby ke private parts abhi ban rahe hote hain, isliye ultrasound se gender pata nahin chalta. Aur India mein PCPNDT Act ke tehat pregnancy mein bacche ka gender pata karna illegal hai, isliye koi bhi scan iske liye nahin kiya jaata.
Thakान (fatigue), breasts mein tenderness, baar baar urine aana, bloating, heartburn, band naak aur sar dard 9 weeks mein bilkul common hain. Yeh sab hormones ki wajah se hota hai. Lekin agar bleeding, tez pet dard ya bahut zyada ulti ho to turant doctor se milein.
Yes. At 9 weeks most women have little or no visible bump. You may just feel your lower tummy firming up as the uterus grows. A bump usually starts to show in the second trimester.
Often yes, on an ultrasound the heartbeat can usually be seen and sometimes heard by this stage. A handheld home Doppler, however, may not reliably pick it up this early.
Light spotting can happen and is not always serious, but any bleeding in pregnancy should be reported to your doctor so they can check that everything is fine.
