How ready a child is emotionally to begin learning to use the potty depends on the individual child. Some children are ready at 18 months, and others are ready at 3. While every child is different, about 22% of children are out of diapers by 2&frac12;, and 88% of children are out of diapers by 3&frac12;.

Your child is ready to learn to use the toilet when he or she:

<ul>
	<li>
	Stays dry for at least 2 hours at a time, or after naps
	</li>
	<li>
	Recognizes that she is urinating or having a bowel movement. For example, your child might go into another room or under the table when she has a bowel movement. This is important&mdash;if you child does not realize she is having a bowel movement, she won&rsquo;t be successful at potty training.
	</li>
	<li>
	Is developing physical skills that are critical to potty training&mdash;the ability to walk, to pull pants up and down, and to get onto/off the potty (with some help).
	</li>
	<li>
	Copies a parent&rsquo;s toileting behavior.
	</li>
	<li>
	Can follow simple instructions.
	</li>
	<li>

	<li>
	If your child is afraid of the potty chair, don&#39;t pressure him or her to use it. Put toilet training aside for 1 or 2 months, and give your child time to get used to the idea of the potty chair and to be comfortable with it.

Nighttime or naptime dryness may occur at the same time as daytime dryness, although it may not occur until a year or so later. Aside from taking your child to the toilet before going to sleep, here are some other tips to help the child stay dry through the night:

You don&#39;t have to master the transition in a day. Take it slow and wait for your baby to pick up. If your child is habituated to using the potty seat in spaces other than bathrooms, you need to take this process to the bathroom first. There is no set pattern or timeline for it. Some parents start as early as when the baby is a month old. They watch for signs of the baby&#39;s pee and poop and run to the bathroom to get their baby done with pee or poop.

However, the ideal age to start toilet training your baby is when your baby is 8 or 9 months old. At this point, your baby&#39;s pee and poop cycle will be a lot more organized because, by this time, your baby would have started solid food. A breastfeeding baby and a baby on solid food will have different pee and poop cycle because a baby who is exclusively on breast milk will pee around 8-12 times a day and can poop either once a week or even many times a day!
