Dizziness during pregnancy is a common phenomenon and the symptoms make you feel as if the room is spinning and can make you feel weak and unsteady. In this article, we will discuss about dizziness in pregnancy, its causes and how to deal with dizziness during pregnancy.

What causes dizziness during pregnancy?

The following reasons can be responsible for dizziness in pregnancy:

1. Increased Blood Flow

Dizziness in early pregnancy is the result of a change in hormonal levels in order to increase blood flow to the body. This happens to help the baby develop. An increased blood flow can result in a change in blood pressure. A low blood pressure can make you feel dizzy as you move from sitting to standing.

2. Ectopic Pregnancy

Another reason for dizziness in pregnancy can be due to an ectopic pregnancy, which takes place when the fertilised egg implants itself outside of the uterus. The egg may implant itself in the fallopian tubes. During this condition, you may experience dizziness, vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain.

3. Growing uterus

Dizziness in the second trimester can occur due to the growing uterus and the pressure it puts on the blood vessels.

4. Diabetes

You can experience dizziness due to gestational diabetes and in case your blood sugar level is low. It occurs when your hormones affect the insulin levels in your body. Your doctor may recommend testing for diabetes between 24 to 28 weeks and if diagnosed, you’ll have to monitor your blood sugar levels on a regular basis.

5. Dehydration

Dehydration can occur anytime during the pregnancy period. To prevent dizziness in pregnancy, drink water regularly and aim for a minimum of 8 to 10 glasses a day. Keeping the body hydrated is of utmost importance during pregnancy.

6. Anemia

Due to a reduced number of healthy Red Blood Cells, you can experience dizziness during pregnancy besides feeling tiredness and shortness of breath.

What should you do if you feel dizzy while pregnant?

If at any point you experience dizziness in pregnancy, remain seated or take a seat or support. Sitting down, bending over, lying on your side and breathing deeply can help increase the blood flow to your brain when you feel dizzy. Take deep breaths and open the windows around you to increase air circulation. Loosen any tight clothing you might be wearing to reduce any suffocation you might be feeling. Avoid getting up instantly from a sitting or lying down position as getting up quickly can be a common reason for dizziness, lightheadedness and fainting.

When to get in touch with your doctor?

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience vaginal bleeding and/or abdominal pain along with dizziness during pregnancy. These could be signs of an ectopic pregnancy, a low-lying placenta or placental abruption. In case your dizziness is accompanied by blurry vision, headaches or palpitations, get in touch with your doctor instantly. These might be the symptoms of severe anemia or some other harmful pregnancy complication.
